All Western military commands at one point issued pocket guides for their soldiers stationed in Germany and Austria. These functioned both as behavioral manuals and as guides to places deemed worthy of visiting. The books contain a wealth of information about the perception of both the Germans and Austrians, and sometimes, just sometimes, the title gives away more than the occupation command might have intended, as the subtitle “A Pocket Map Reader for the Individual Invader” suggests:
